Dr. Svevo & Mr. Freud

Doctor Zeno e Mister Freud. My illustration for the cover art of the literary supplement of the newspaper il Piccolo about Italo Svevo and his relationship with psychoanalysis as in his masterpiece “La coscienza di Zeno” (The Confessions of Zeno/Zeno's Conscience). In the backroom of a Café Sigmund Freud lying over the patient’s chaise longue is reading Zeno’s diary, behind him Italo Svevo/Zeno is smoking and looking at him with distrust. To their right in the cafe the bourgeoisie goes on its business in the state of contagious suffering narrated by Svevo. To their left through a window a blue sky and a blue sea and a ship that’s getting painted, it’s the world of business of Svevo/Ettore Schmitz, successful merchant of naval paint, bourgeois himself, and suffering.
